We are off the dock, packed and on our way. It seemed that all our gear was in readiness and Sea Star happily jumped into Narragansett Bay. We headed out of West Passage and stopped at Third Beach on the Sakonnet River for our first night.
One of our pieces of “gear” was our house cat, Maggie. Of course Maggie wasn’t a sailing cat and she never asked to be. We brought her aboard and had to keep her locked up in a cabin during our time at the RIMS dock. Well, when we arrived at Third Beach, anchoring out, we opened the hatch to her. She really is quite a timid cat. She finally came out after much coaxing and began to explore the cockpit, then noticed two terns sitting on the bow rail. Her interest was immediately piqued. She snuck up behind them-until a small motorboat’s approach scared her back into the cabin, where she wouldn’t come out again.

Our second night brought us into Marian Harbor with the plan to transit the Cape Cod Canal in the morning, and continue across Massachusetts Bay to Provincetown.
We are aware that weather is our new constant companion. Bertha is forming off Africa. She is expected to become a hurricane and impact the Bahama Islands. A plan has been hatched to meet Dan’s nephew, Steven, and his son Daniel at Provincetown Harbor. They will help us with the crossing between Provincetown, MA and Halifax, NS unless the weather and winds are conducive to sailing right on to St. Pierre and Miquelon Islands, FR off the southern coast of Newfoundland. Dan and Steve are the experienced crew and Daniel and Kathy will take less watch time. But right now all we can do is watch and listen as the storm begins to form, fades, forms again and finally our Bouy Weather report suggests she will be impacting the seas at the time we had hoped to begin our crossing. We delay our start so Daniel and Steven do not have to spend their precious time just waiting with us.
